Have removed objectionable content, say Google and Facebook in court

New Delhi: A Delhi court is hearing a case today against 21 internet companies including Google and Yahoo that accuses them of criminal conspiracy in hosting obscene material online.

Facebook India filed a compliance report, stating that it had removed the content in question. Google also confirmed the same.

The petition against them, filed by a Delhi resident named Vinay Rai, says the companies have hosted obscene and inflammatory content including morphed pictures of Hindu gods and the Prophet Mohammed.

The case is also being heard in the Delhi High Court, where some of the companies have challenged the summons to their executives. The High Court said last month that India could follow China's lead and block websites. The companies say that though they will follow all Indian cyber-laws, it is impossible to censor or monitor the internet.

Lawyers for Google informed the court this morning that the company has removed the objectionable content.
