Though born in California, Hayter's parents were Canadian. He did some live acting in the early 1990s, but became interested in voice acting after appearing in an episode of the sitcom Major Dad as a character with a Russian accent. This led to his role as the voice of Captain America in the popular 1994 Spider-Man animated series. He also did some voices in various anime dubs, such as The Castle of Cagliostro. Contrary to popular belief, Hayter did not voice Wolverine/Logan in X-Men: The Animated Series
